But thyroid disorders, high prolactin, and other hormonal conditions can mimic PCOS/PMOS almost exactly. That's why PCOS/PMOS is diagnosed after considering — and, when appropriate, ruling out — other causes of similar symptoms.
In adults, diagnosis usually requires 2 of 3 features: hyperandrogenism (signs of high androgens on skin, hair, or in blood tests), ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovaries on ultrasound or an elevated AMH. When irregular cycles and hyperandrogenism are both already present, an ultrasound isn't always needed. 11 Does insulin resistance mean I will become diabetic?
